On yer bike

Well we are now experiencing Puglia from the bike saddle.  We are adjusting to two days riding so far and our bottoms seem to be holding up after 60 odd kms.

The bike tour takes us through quiet byways mostly tiny narrow roads between lovely old stone walls.  You have to stick to the pavement because the dust is full of prickly pear cactus prickles and I have already had to repair one puncture.

There are 50 million olive trees some hundreds of years old.  They are all protected and cannot be cut down and if you need to build where a tree is you have to have it transplanted.
Our bikes are very new and cruisey.

People cultivate between the trees and right now they are planting out millions of lettuce and other veges.  Every field has an old man in with a rotary hoe or a watering can.  They have these funky little buildings called Trulli which are conical stone structures (very middle earth)

Down on the coast we stopped at an amazing old cove near San Vito.

You can go down and swim at a little beach - the village on the cliff above is much bigger than you would think and has heaps of little winding streets and guess what - many medievel churches.

We bought some sandwiches from a little shop and sat by the water and ate lunch.  The little fishing boats look like they have been in use since Christ (things around here have dates  500 BC)
We are trying to update the blog regularly but internet connections are scarce and we felt quite lost when we could not get on line yesterday.
However a man in the hotel just gave Gillie and I a glass of champagne because we come from NZ (the land of sportsmen) so we will cope
